Beyond the Surface: How Cellular Health Drives True Vitality

The skin is often viewed as the mirror to our internal health

In other words, if our skin is pale and dry, then there is probably an internal issue that is driving this. At IHA we are one of the few clinics that is fortunate enough to be able to focus on both longevity medicine and aesthetic skin health. This means that when your skin is struggling to glow from the normal bio-stimulation of skin peels, microneedling and laser, we are able to turn to our longevity knowledge and investigate why. Skin health begins deep inside your cells.

One of the common culprits of fatigue and dull skin as we age, is a flagging mitochondrial system and it is worth spending a few minutes on understanding this important organelle energy system.

An infographic titled "Function of mitochondria" illustrating key cellular roles of the mitochondrion, styled with light blue arrows, olive green accents, and dark charcoal graphics against a clean off-white background without shading. Icons around the central mitochondrion represent calcium balance, energy conversion (ATP), heat production, regulation of immunity, and regulation of cellular proliferation.

1. The Cellular Powerhouse: Mitochondria & ATP

Every city needs an Eskom to power the lights, and likewise every one of the 30 trillion cells inside of us needs a set of mitochondrial batteries to power it’s energy.

The Fuel (ATP): Rather like your car engine combines petrol and oxygen to spark and energise your car, Mitochondria combine glucose and the oxygen you breathe to make Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP), the fundamental energy currency of life.

Why It Matters for Aesthetics & Longevity: Every process in your body relies on ATP; from building new collagen and repairing damaged DNA to detoxifying liver cells and firing brain synapses.

The Aging Cascade: As we age, mitochondrial function naturally slows down. Lower ATP production leads to slower skin cell turnover, dullness, reduced elasticity, and systemic fatigue.

2. Micro-Circulation & Tissue Oxygenation

If your car has a tank full of petrol but the engine is not working, then we all know that we are not going anywhere. Similarly, if we are eating well but are mitochondria are spluttering, our cells are not able to convert that food into usable energy.

If your car has petrol and the engine is working, but the fuel line is blocked – we are similarly going nowhere. Similarly, if our body has absorbed the nutrients, our mitochondrial are working but the small blood vessels that feed the cells are blocked, our cells cannot make usable energy.

These small blood vessels are called our micro-circulation and as we age, it is just as important to keep them healthy as it is to maintain our mitochondrial batteries:

  • Nutrient Delivery: Micro-capillary flow transports oxygen and vital compounds directly to skin fibroblasts (the cells that synthesize collagen).
  • Waste Removal: Healthy micro-circulation flushes out metabolic waste and toxins, preventing dullness and fluid retention.
  • The Cellular Result: Higher tissue oxygenation triggers a natural cascade of repair, leaving skin visibly plump, firm, and radiant.

3. Diagnosing the problem

Unfortunately that there is no blood test and there is no scan that will diagnose the state of our mitochondria. However, we do have a machine called an Omegawave that will give a an estimation of the state of our mitochondrial health. It does this by reading the electrical waves in the body and we have found it to quite useful in discovering the cause of fatigue in our patients.

4. Fine-Tuning Your Cellular Energy at IHASA

To supercharge ATP production and optimize micro-capillary flow, our Cape Town clinic utilizes science-backed treatments that work in total harmony with your body’s biology.

TreatmentHow It WorksKey Benefits
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)Delivers 100% pure oxygen in a pressurized environment, dissolving oxygen directly into blood plasma and reaching deep, micro-capillary tissue beds.Stimulates stem cell release, driving healing of injuries and enhancement of skin and muscle.
Stimulates VEGF which is the growth factor that drives new blood vessel formation and so improves any poor microcirculation problem.
Enhances longevity of cells by improving the ends of the DNA strands.
Enhances mental clarity & reduces brain fog
HOCATT Ozone TherapyCombines ozone, transdermal ozone steam, carbonic acid, and far-infrared light in a relaxing capsule session.Inactivates pathogens
Activates healthy NRF-2 inflammatory pathways which stimulates stem cells (improves skin glow), activates mitochondria (improves energy), and enhances the glutathione pathway (removes toxins).
In a nutshell, it enhances skin vitality, energy, and detoxification
Red light therapyRed light penetrates the mitochondria in cells, boosting an enzyme that makes energy production more efficient.Boosts energy.
Encourages skin healing.
Causes the skin to glow.

The Takeaway: Harmonized Inner & Outer Health

Real, sustained vitality is created when internal cellular health aligns with external aesthetic care. By improving tissue oxygenation and restoring mitochondrial balance, you achieve an integrated state of health that looks as vibrant as it feels.
