LIP FILLERS

Q& A – ANSWERED BY DR. DUNCAN CARMICHAEL

WHAT IS LIP FILLER?

As we age, our lips start to thin. For most people, lip filler is a natural product that restores the lip volume that we had when we were younger.

Unfortunately, the use of the wrong product or poor techniques have given lip fillers a bad reputation. The truth is that with the correct filler and done in an artistic way, lip fillers look completely natural and no one would know you have had them. For this reason our preferred filler is the Swiss product called Teosyl RHA. It is a beautifully soft natural filler that has proven to be a leader in its field.

NEED TO KNOW

The lips are the most sensitive part of the face. For this reason we take care to numb them with anaesthetic creams and injections. We use a cannula so there should be minimal swelling or bruising. You can go straight back to work but it is advisable not to talk too much after a procedure and to avoid alcohol that night to minimize bruising.

WHEN TO AVOID

Do not have lip fillers if you are having dental treatment, gum disease, a bad sinusitis or cold sores. Any infection in the mouth area can disrupt the final result.

Alcohol or blood thinners like aspirin are not a good idea for a day before as they can worsen bruising.

Unlike Botox, you can have fillers while pregnant or breast feeding as the body sees them as completely natural.

HOW LONG WILL IT LAST?

On average your first lip filler will last a good 6 months. The filler stimulates the body to build collagen around it so the second filler may last a year and the third may last up to 2 years.

The worse your stress, the less you sleep and the more you smoke will tend all tend to break filler down quicker.

POST CARE OPTIONS

Use any lip balm like Aloe lip care, Vaseline, or lip salves are all good at hydrating the lips. My favourite is Post Laser Gel made by RegimA. (Available at IHA)

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS?

Although generally mild, you will walk away from the procedure slightly swollen and wake up the next morning with mild temporary swelling.

Bruising can occur but is much less than it used to be thanks to the modern delivery techniques.

Allergy is extremely rare but if you develop a severe lip swelling please contact us. We have a dissolving injection that removes the product in a few seconds.

Lumps are rare and are a reaction against the filler that after a few weeks can leave tiny reactive bumps that you can feel in the lip. It is generally caused by some mouth infection in a sensitive person. In the unlikely event that this happens then please contact us so we can reverse it.

THE COST

R4400 per goal of lip filler. We generally use only 1 vial in a session. If you are just wanting to try this out gently, you can request a half vial costing R2200.
